Drives and operators

Types of operation

Novoferm offers various options for operating sectional door drives. A simple manual system may be suitable for doors that are used less frequently. We recommend an electrically powered door with pulse control if traffic is heavy. We can always supply the right type of operator for the configuration of your door and to satisfy your requirements. All of our types of drives and operators comply with EU standard EN 13241- 1.

Drag cable – manual operation
If the door measures less than 16 m² and is only used occasionally, you might opt for a drag cable, which does, however, require a certain amount of physical exertion (transformation ratio 1:1). There is a risk of the door not opening fully or correctly, which may result in damages.

Manual chain hoist – manual operation
Working a manual crank requires less strength than pulling a drag cable (transformation ratio 1:4). The system – which is suitable for doors up to a surface area of 30 m² – ensures that doors are fixed at maximum opening position.

Dead man's control – electric
This system is suitable for less frequent use. It only takes one push of the button to open the door, but when closing the door, the key has to be pressed and held until the door is shut. That way, whoever is operating the door can see whether any hazardous situations arise.

Pulse control – electric
If the doors are opened and shut frequently, we recommend pulse control. When opening and closing, the door is automatically moved to the end position, which can be adjusted electronically. The key does not need to be held during movement. Obstacle detection is integrated into the closing edge of the door.

Pulse control with remote control
Pulse control is excellently suited for remote operation. The time you can save is not inconsiderable. Forklift truck drivers can stay with their vehicle and open and close the door by remote control. Doors with this option are also fitted with a stationary safety opto sensor.

Remote control with rapid drive
This system is recommended for doors that are opened and closed frequently. The high operating speed opens the door particularly rapidly, helping you to save energy. It closes at normal speed. Doors with pulse control can also be fitted with variable speed adjustment.

Operators in controllers

Novoferm offers a wide choice of quality operators that can be built into the control unit of the door system to enable you to operate your sectional door. A number of units can also be mounted on the inside or outside wall, or on a pillar. They include safety functions, switches, remote controls, rotating beacons, etc.

Main switch with padlock
During maintenance of the door system, the power can be cut by turning off the main switch. Padlocking this switch as an additional safeguard prevents third parties accidently turning the power back on while maintenance is still ongoing.

Key switch
The key switch locks the controller to prevent unauthorized operation of the door. Only appropriately authorized personnel have a key that has to be inserted and activated before the door can be operated.

Emergency OFF switch
Novoferm offers the option of including an emergency OFF switch on control units when local, country-specific or international laws stipulate a rapid cut-off function for sectional doors that open or close electrically.

Wireless signal transmission
Usually, the controller and module on the door leaf are connected by flexible spiral cable. Since the cable can cause malfunctions and suffer damage, Novoferm supplies door modules with batteries to transmit signals – such as obstacle detection – wirelessly to the controller.

Emergency chain drive
All drive systems are standard equipped with a mechanical means of operation that is directly attached to the servo motor's gear to ensure that sectional doors can be opened even if the power fails. The function must be manually activated/deactivated using the shift cables. The gear can then be operated with the chain.

Quick release drive
A drive can also be supplied with a quick release mechanism, in which case the gear is separated from the spring shaft by a wire enabling faster manual opening of the sectional door if malfunctions occur. A sectional door with quick release function is fitted with a spring fracture safety device, of course.

Additional operators

Key switch
A door can also be operated from a separate key switch located on the outside wall. Two models are available: a flush-mounted version that is often used in new construction projects, and the surface-mounted alternative that can be retrofitted during renovation projects without having to break open the structure.

Electronic coded keypad
The door can be fitted with a coded keypad to enable it to be opened at any time and around the clock. This solution is particularly practical if access to secured collection or delivery points is required day and night by haulage and courier companies.

Additional operators
If you want to be able to operate a door from several positions, or require remote control, e.g. by the gate guard, an additional operator is the solution. All of the keys on the standard operator are also included on this practical Open / Stop / Close operator.

Traffic lights and rotating beacons
Traffic lights and rotating beacons can be installed on both sides of a door to prevent injuries and damage to the door or goods. Rotating beacons warn of hazardous situations. They start up before the door starts moving. Traffic lights control the traffic passing through. They prevent damage to the doors.

Pull switch
A driver on a forklift truck can operate the door by pulling the switch without having to dismount. This is a good solution when a lot of staff use the door and you don't want to have to give each of them a remote control. The pull switch is often hung from a beam several metres in front of, or behind, the door.

Remote control
Novoferm incorporates a standard receiver into the operators for its doors. As such, door systems can be easily upgraded to run on remote control. You can choose between remote controls with 2 or 4 channels for operating up to four different doors.
