Separate access for people and goods

Although a pass door can be integrated into a Novoferm NovoLux or Thermo door, we recommend providing separate access for people and goods. The best solution is a fixed door at the front of the building, separate from the sectional door, or a fixed side door right next to the sectional door. While pass doors can be incorporated into sectional doors, they do not aid stability.

Added to which, restrictions apply in respect of the width, height and sill height of a pass door that might make it non-compliant with pertinent laws and regulations governing emergency exits. Consult your local authorities to make sure you are selecting the right pass door.

Fixed side door next to the sectional door

The advantage of a fixed side door is that it totally separates access for people and goods, which enhances security, increases user friendliness, and helps the stability of the sectional door.

A fixed side door is installed in the front of the building next to the sectional door.

The side door has the same infill and panel structure and an identical top panel to match the structure of the sectional door, giving the architectural design an attractive overall appearance.

Select the right door
A fixed side door can either open inwards or outwards. You can choose whether you want the hinges on the left or right. If you want the side door to act as an emergency exit, it must open outwards.

Thermally separated joints
The section joints on NovoLux 60 pass and side doors are wind and water repellent, and thermally separated. Special insulation profiles inhibit thermal transmission.

Installation behind or in front of a clear opening
A sectional door is always mounted behind the opening. So if you wanted to install a fixed side door on the same side of the building, we would also mount it behind the opening. The benefits of this procedure are two-fold: Both doors are aligned at the same depth, while the passage width of the side door is 810 mm if the clear width is 1000 mm (1000 + 50 - 240 = 810 mm).

This not only produces an attractive result; it also adds 60 mm of width compared to installation in the opening. If installed in the opening, the door surfaces are not aligned at the same depth, and the passage width is only 750 mm for the same clear width (1000 - 10 - 240 = 750 mm).

Pass door integrated into the sectional door

If installation of a fixed door in the front of your building is not an option, Novoferm can incorporate a pass door into the sectional door.

Various possibilities exist that satisfy the most stringent requirements in terms of both structure and appearance, and security. Integrated pass doors incorporate an intelligent hinge system, a perfectly aligned locking system with stabilizing cams, and an integrated security switch.

Three sill heights are available: 22, 110 and 195 mm.

Integrated pass door contact switch
The pass door contact switch mounted underneath the cam holder is an integrated safety feature that prevents operation of the sectional door when the pass door is open.

Stabilizing cams
The door is held in place by so-called stabilizing cams, which make sure the door never droops while at the same time enhancing the seal integrity between pass door and sectional door. The magnetic contact for the contact switch on the pass door is located underneath the cam mount.

Position
A pass door cannot be fitted in the outer sections of a door for reasons of stability. The illustrations show where pass doors can be positioned, and where not. Pass doors can be integrated in sectional doors up to a door leaf width of max. 6000 mm.

Attractive pass door design
Novoferm recently optimized the overall pass door design. The hinge system, for example, was integrated in the sectional door to eliminate any visible traces of fasteners on the outside and make the standard NovoLux pass door profiles less conspicuous.

Low sill version: 22 mm
To reduce the risk of tripping, Novoferm has developed a 22 mm pass door sill that satisfies emergency exit requirements in certain conditions. This barrier-free access is even suitable for lightweight, mobile transport equipment.

Optional: Coloured pass door profiles
If you opt for a coloured Thermo or NovoLux sectional door with integrated pass door, the profiles of the pass door will not be standard painted in the same colour as the sectional door. This is an option you can choose to suit your personal taste. Some prefer a pass door that is clearly visible, others opt for an inconspicuous solution. Novoferm offers both options.

Integrated pass door that functions as an emergency exit

If you want your integrated pass door to perform the function of an emergency exit, you should consult your local authorities about the regulations. Legal regulations specify the requirements for pass doors depending on the number of people using the building.

Generally, four criteria are key to deciding whether a door can be used as an emergency exit: type of lock, door width, door height, and sill height. An integrated pass door always opens to the outside, which is a legal requirement for emergency exits.

Door width and height
Depending on local or national regulations, laws and supervisory authorities specify a minimum door width and height for pass doors used as emergency exits.

22 mm low sill version
To reduce the risk of tripping, Novoferm has developed a 22 mm pass door sill that satisfies emergency exit requirements in certain conditions.

An integrated pass door can be no more than 940 mm wide or 2250 mm high. Talk to your local authorities if you want to use the pass door as an emergency exit.

Panic lock
Pass doors acting as emergency exits must be fitted with a panic lock. Various panic lock designs are available. A pass door with panic lock can be unlocked from the inside at any time by pushing on the handle, even if the lock is engaged.

Accessories and options for pass doors

Novoferm invests a lot of time and effort in the existing options to ensure best possible integration of a pass door in your sectional door. We place great importance on safety and ease of use, with particular focus on the most attractive possible solutions for hinges, switches, locks and additional locks. We can, moreover, advise comprehensively on the choice of sill height, opening direction, and door dimensions and positions.

The Novoferm range of locks for pass doors includes six types:
two normal locks and four panic locks (if you want to use your pass door as an emergency exit).

Fire service regulations specify the use of panic locks for certain situations.

In the case of a type E panic lock, the door can be locked and unlocked at any time from the inside with a key. Catch and bolt are activated simultaneously by pushing the handle. The panic unlocking mechanism should only be used when the key isn't in the cylinder. Catch and bolt can only be operated from the outside with a key. Once the panic function has been engaged, the bolt stays in locked position. This is the lock to use if your pass door acts as an emergency exit but not as an access door during the day.

Activation of a type B panic lock is exactly the same from the inside as a type E panic lock, but with a handle on the outside that can be locked or unlocked. These doors can be used for access during the day if you want. The lock works as follows: The pass door can be locked and unlocked at any time from the outside with a key. If the bolt is activated and locked with the key, the outer handle is disengaged and cannot be used to open the door. Even if the panic function is activated and the bolt is engaged in the lock, the outside handle remains disengaged. Once the panic function has been engaged, the bolt stays in locked position. The outside handle cannot be used to open the lock again until the cylinder is activated with the key, thus re-engaging the outside handle.

If you opt for a coloured Thermo or NovoLux sectional door with integrated pass door, the profiles of the pass door will not be standard painted in the same colour as the sectional door. This is an option you can choose to suit your personal taste. Some prefer a pass door that is clearly visible, others opt for an inconspicuous solution. Novoferm offers both options.

Additional locks
Additional locks can be added to the upper and lower sections of the door to enhance safety. The same key can be used to operate all cylinder locks. The additional locks are fitted with knobs and can therefore be opened from the inside without a key.
